The United Nation’s Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) is promoting the adoption of several Brazilian social programs, including its national biodiesel program, in Haiti. According to José Graziano, FAO Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean, Haiti is home to several plants similar to those used successfully in biodiesel production in Brazil.

The FAO will provide technical support to Haiti’s Central Bank in managing the funds, mostly from the European Union, dedicated to the program. It will also provide low-interest credit to support individual agriculture production for use as biodiesel feedstock, similar to Brazil’s National Financing Program. Graziano also confirmed that a diplomatic mission lead by Chile and involving Argentina and Brazil is expected to study the possibility of transferring other successful social programs to Haiti.
