Haitian Representation at the UN

To date, the new Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, has chosen only a few appointees. One of these appointees, Michele Montas, is Haitian. She was the wife of the radio journalist Jean Dominique, who was featured in the documentary 'The Agronomist'.

Jean Dominique and Michele Montas spoke to the poor in their own language and told them they could bring about social change by mobilizing for their rights. They exposed human rights violations, corruption, and state sponsored violence. In many countries, this would be taken for granted. In Haiti, it was enough to have Dominique assassinated on April 3, 2000.

Michele Montas continued her husband's work in Haiti for some time. However, she was forced to flee Haiti after her bodyguard was killed and threats were made against her life.

Sadly, Haiti is not a safe place for her and other journalists like herself. Many journalists were killed from 2000-2002, while two members of the HII Board of Directors were there. These abuses continue, unfortunately.

Haitians should be proud that one of their own has been selected to serve at such a high level in the United Nations. As Ban Ki Moon's spokeswoman, her voice will be heard not just in Haiti, but globally. When we talk about Haitians, let’s remember individuals who are making a difference not just in Haiti, but in the U.S, Africa, other countries, and now the United Nations.
