With a population of 160 million and a vehicular population of 35 million excluding plants and machinery, and a growing economy looking to diversify on all fronts,our country is the next large market for energy. Perennial challenges in the petroleum industry and the ever rising cost of petrofuel now informs the imperative for new energy sources to drive development here.

I in 2008 worked with an American investor to secure 7,000 hectares of land set up a Jathropha farm in Southwest Nigeria. This land was given to us free by a family with an agreement for profit-sharing when business began on it. Unfortunately,the investor could not secure the needed credit to start off before the global economic crisis set in. This expanse of land is still available on same terms for Jathropha planting to produce biodiesel. I hereby make your company an offer to take up this opportunity to do business here, as you will not spend money on land acquisition, and import taxes on agricultural equipment is low.

For information, a gallon of petrol here sells the equivalent of $3. A gallon of diesel sells for $4.5 or more . I suppose these figures might be interesting when compared with the relatively cheaper prices of biodiesel.

The State Department and Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations are the lead for the MOU, which makes possible the exchange of experiences between the U.S. and Brazil on sustainable biofuels, while enabling the exchange of information to several third-party countries in Central America and the Caribbean which have unique opportunities for the development and local use of biofuels. The OAS serves as an institutional partner to the Agreement, supporting technical assistance and policy reform activities in each of the third-party countries, including: the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Guatemala, Jamaica, and St. Kitts and Nevis. Ministers with responsibility for energy and other senior officials from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Guatemala and Jamaica will participate in this Tour.

The site visit will facilitate the sharing of experience and information on several alternative energy solutions, including biofuels and solar power. It will also enable an exchange among the authorities on innovative programs and policies that encourage the development and use of clean energy alternatives. Participants in the site visit will join in a series of visits on Friday, August 27, including tours of the Concentrated Solar Power Facility of Florida Power and Light (Indiantown, Fla.), the USDA Agricultural Research Service Sugarcane Field Station (Canal Point, Fla.), and the Florida Crystals Cogeneration Facility (Okeelanta, Fla.). A final meeting and strategy session has been scheduled for all participants on Saturday, August 28th at the Hotel Intercontinental West Miami.

Jatropha is left with poisonous waste after oil extraction.

Moringa oil extracted from the seed of the malunggay plant is now being tapped as source of biodiesel. It is gaining preferable status over Jatropha as a source of biofuel. All parts of the malunggay plant are used whereas Jatropha is left with poisonous waste after oil extraction. Also, malunggay needs only one to two years for seedling maturation compared to Jatropha's three to five years.
